I think I know the answer to this already but I might as well ask. We made a mistake when ordering a server and are now stuck with Server Essentials. When going though the initial install, it either wants to join an existing domain and be the DC or create a brand new one. The new server cannot be a DC. It needs to serve as an application server or simple file host. I heard there is a way to turn off active directory and domain services and put Server Essentials in a workgroup.
However, we would really like for it to be on the domain but not as any DC. Is there any way of doing this? Ended up doing what Galen recommended -- re-formatting the server and installing Windows 7 Pro. Now the server can work as an application server although not in an ideal situation. There are only six users though so Windows 7 Pro suffices. Extremely disappointed the vendor did not catch this when ordering the server.
The vendor always catches when Office or antivirus software is not ordered or when the extended warranty is not purchased but completely overlooked the Server Essentials OS. Not saying it's the vendor fault though because I should have caught to begin with -- it just slipped through the cracks in my haste to get the server ordered.
